From geoff at geoffschultz.org Tue Jan 1 17:58:35 2008 From: geoff at geoffschultz.org (Geoffrey W. Schultz) Date: Tue, 01 Jan 2008 17:58:35 -0500 Subject: [BlueJacket Sailing] BlueJacket's 2008 Cruising Plans Message-ID: <20080101225842.6CD7C61E0C@mailwash2.pair.com> Happy New Year from the crew of the BlueJacket! We hope that everyone had a wonderful 2007 and we hope that 2008 will be even better. I've been remiss in writing to let people know what we've been up to since we arrived in Deltaville, VA with BlueJacket. We decided that we're going to do something very unique (for us) as we're going to head NORTH this upcoming season and we'll spend the winter at home, outside of Boston. As a result we had to winterize the boat as she's going to be in freezing temperatures for the first time since I've owned her. We've never done that before, so that was a learning experience. We also had to pull everything off of the boat that couldn't freeze, which included lots of food-stuffs and cleaning products. It's amazing how much stuff we took off, and in the process we gained about 2" of waterline back! The SUV we rented to drive home was packed to the gills. We also had BlueJacket hauled so that the hull could dry out and we pulled the mast so that it could be repainted. She definitely looks a lot different! Since we've been home I've done a major overhaul on the www.GeoffSchultz.org web site. It looks very similar to the way it looked before, but the underpinnings are completely different. All of the pages are dynamically generated from a database and as a result of doing this, I've been able to imbed Google Maps into all of the indexes and trip reports. You can click on any of the position markers on the maps to see the date that we were there and links to any trip reports. I can now create trip reports on the web site via e-mail from the boat and I've replaced the Yahoo based mailing list with my own so my trip logs won't get reformatted or have ads inserted. The bottom line is that the web site looks much like it did before, but it has a lot more capabilities. As I mentioned before, we're going to have a very different cruising season this year. The current plans are to head up the Chesapeake in early May and then follow the Delaware Bay to the Atlantic. We'll head to New York where we'll follow the Hudson River to Erie Canal. That will take us through Lake George and Lake Champlain. We'll have to pull the mast at one point and transport it on the boat for quite a few miles. Forty to fifty locks later we'll enter the St. Lawrence River near Montreal, Canada. From there we'll follow the St. Lawrence to Quebec and then to the Canadian Maritimes where we'll explore Prince Edward Island. [] We'll then cross to Newfoundland and explore the southern coast. The guide books make this area of Newfoundland sound spectacular, comparing it to the fiords of Norway with 1500 ft cliffs that have waterfalls cascading into the sea. From there we'll head to Nova Scotia and explore the Bras d'Or lakes which bisect the northern end of Nova Scotia. Then we'll work our way down the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, eventually crossing the Bay of Fundy and re-entering the US. We'll then head down the coast of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and eventually we'll end up in Rhode Island where I think that we'll leave BlueJacket for the winter. I plan to enter the Canadian Maritimes sometime mid-August as by then the waters have warmed up and the prevalence of fog is reduced. I do expect a lot of fog as the guide books show that fog is present between 25% and 50% of the days in August and September. I'm glad we've got a good radar! We should be back in RI sometime in early-mid October, just in time to enjoy New England's beautiful foliage season. The whole trip will be about 2500 nautical miles and will take about 6 months. So that's the plan, and who knows, we might even stick to it! :-) Have a great new year and keep in touch! -- Geoff & Sue -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Here's my definition: ***** Cruising is about the journey and not the destination. It's the people that you meet along the way and places you visit. It's getting to know an area by sticking around after you find that you're drawn to it. It's fixing complex systems in exotic locations. It's knowing that you can maintain your vessel because you have to do it in places where there's no one else who can do it. It's carrying more spares than you could possibly have imagined before you started cruising. It's turning your sleek, beautiful boat into something less beautiful as you load it down with a wind generator, solar panels, fuel jugs, etc. It's visiting local markets and hauling groceries down dusty roads. It's doing your laundry in little laundromats and catching hell when it gets wet on the way back to the boat in the dinghy. It's having your boat look like a Chinese laundry when you do laundry at anchor. It's dealing with officials in foreign countries where you may not speak their language. It's beautiful sunrises and wonderful sunsets enhanced by good friends and cocktails in the cockpit. It's catching your dinner off the back of your boat. It's potluck dinners on the beach with groups of cruisers that you've never met before and it's having your (new/good) friends over for dinner. It's days when you wonder if the wind will ever stop howling and other days when you can't wait for a breath of air to appear. It's lovely nights on a satin anchorage and other nights praying that the anchor holds. It's the days that you always dream of as you're flying along on a broad reach behind a reef and it's bashing your way into seas and counting the hours until you find shelter. It's 99% tedium and 1% sheer terror. It's huge learning curves and wondering how you ever survived when you first started. It's keeping up with friends that you met along the way and sharing those common bonds. It's desolate anchorages and pulling into a marina where you're stuck among all of the pretty boats that never leave the dock and having those people look at you like you're the Beverly Hillbillies because you're a cruising boat. It's day hops along a coast and multi-day passages. It's lots of stuff that I forgot to put in here or haven't experienced yet. The vast majority of cruising has very little to do with moving a boat as most of your time is spent at anchor. It's learning to live on a boat in a foreign location. Cruising is lots of things to different people. Have an open mind and go experience it for yourself. -- Geoff -- Geoff From geoff at geoffschultz.org Wed Mar 26 12:42:23 2008 From: geoff at geoffschultz.org (Geoff Schultz) Date: Wed, 26 Mar 2008 12:42:23 -0400 Subject: [BlueJacket Sailing] Cayman Island Diving & Preparing to Leave Message-ID: <20080326164227.B240461E4B@mailwash2.pair.com> Ahoy everyone, We hope that you've survived the winter without too many problems. We did and we're getting ready to depart for the boat in about a month. We're wrapping up lots of project and ordering lots of equipment. Here's a photo of the project that I finished today. It's a new control panel for the watermaker. Pretty exciting, huh? [] As you may recall, we're headed to Newfoundland via the St. Lawrance river. You can find an updated map and description of our trip at http://www.geoffschultz.org/Log_Page.php?id=1128 Since I won't get to do any diving on this trip (that is unless I have to dive on the boat to do a repair), Sue & I took a vacation to Cayman Islands and spent 10 days at the Southern Cross Club. I got in 9 days of diving and shot a lot of wonderful images and video. If you'd like to see them, please visit http://www.geoffschultz.org/Travel/2008/Cayman_Index.shtml [] The next time that you hear from us, we'll be in VA getting ready to leave. Hopefully we'll see some of you before leaving. -- Geoff & Sue -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As some of you may have noticed, we haven't departed for our planned cruise to Newfoundland. The reason and the bad news is that Sue has cervical cancer. The good news is that it appears that it was caught at a very early stage and that she should have a complete recovery and should be cured. As most of you read this on Tuesday morning, Sue will be entering the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA to undergo a radical hysterectomy. She has a wonderful doctor and she's young and healthy, so she should come through the operation with flying colors. We found out about this a couple of months ago and since then she's undergone a battery of tests and is quite tired of being poked and prodded. She's had an amazing attitude and has been quite the trouper. She's looking forward to having the surgery completed and getting on with life. The surgery will take place on Tuesday from about 9 AM to 1 PM, so please have her in your thoughts and prayers. We thought that we were going to skip cruising this year, but after looking at our schedule and her recovery period, it looks like we'll be able to make the cruise after all. Assuming that all goes well, I plan to move the boat from Deltaville, VA to the Hudson River in NY in about a month. Once the boat gets there, Sue will have recovered for 6 weeks and should be released to travel. She'll join the boat in NY and we'll work our way up the Hudson River and Erie Canal, which should be nice and calm for Sue. Then we'll continue on our way to the St. Lawrence River and on to Newfoundland. Right now I have someone tentatively scheduled to help me move BlueJacket from VA to the Hudson River, but that's not firm. So, if there's anyone who would like to help me move the boat, starting at the end of June and probably getting to the Hudson around July 7th, please let me know. Right now the plan is to head up the Chesapeake, head down the Delaware Bay and then up the coast to NY in day-hops. The alternative is to head down the Chesapeake to the Atlantic and then head up the coast to NY. In reality, the distance is almost the same, so I'd rather take my time and get to explore the Chesapeake and Delaware bays. I'll get you to and from the boat and make sure that we eat well. So, if you're interested, let me know! Sue & I just got back from a week of working on BlueJacket. We had lots of projects that we needed to complete and to check up on, so we headed down for 5 days. Well, the work didn't go as fast a projected, so we stuck around for another 2 days to get things wrapped up. I installed a new watermaker control panel, a new VHF antenna for an AIS transceiver, :ED anchor light, a new WiFi transceiver and completed a bunch of small projects. We're had new cockpit cushions fabricated, which turned out great. We're also having the dodger Strataglass panels re-fabricated and spent quite a bit of time consulting on the design. BlueJacket is in great shape and ready to explore new places. Tomorrow will start very early, so I had better wrap this up. Please keep Sue in your thoughts and payers and I'll let you know how things turn out. -- Geoff & Sue From geoff at geoffschultz.org Tue May 27 19:15:47 2008 From: geoff at geoffschultz.org (Geoff Schultz) Date: Tue, 27 May 2008 19:15:47 -0400 Subject: [BlueJacket Sailing] Sue Update (1) Message-ID: <20080527231552.D9A4061E40@mailwash2.pair.com> Ahoy from the crew of the BlueJacket! I'm happy to report that Sue's surgery went well. According to the surgeon, it went as well as it could have. It was a long surgery, almost 4 hours, but the Dr. wanted to be a thorough as possible and not leave any potential source of cancer. As a result they removed her cervix, uterus and some lymph nodes (this was purely just-in-case). When Sue's parent's and I finally got to see Sue, she was very sleepy due to the surgery and the hydro-morphine drip that she was receiving for the pain. She was doing her best to stay awake, so we finally left her for the night. The surgeon said that she'll probably be in the hospital until Friday, so if you'd like to call her, please let me know and I'll be glad to provide the number. She's at the Lahey Clinic, Burlington MA, room 7W13. The bottom line is that so far she's come through the surgery just fine. Now we just hope that the recovery goes well. Thanks to everyone for their well wishes. They've been passed on to Sue. -- Geoff P.S. Sorry for the brief note, but I'm beat and have many calls to return. From geoff at geoffschultz.org Wed May 28 17:20:28 2008 From: geoff at geoffschultz.org (Geoff Schultz) Date: Wed, 28 May 2008 17:20:28 -0400 Subject: [BlueJacket Sailing] Sue Update (2) Message-ID: <20080528212030.F0A0C61E1F@mailwash2.pair.com> Ahoy everyone! I'll keep this short and sweet and probably won't provide any more updates for a while, but enough of you have expressed interest in receiving updates that it'll just be much more simple to send out a message to this list instead of individual e-mails. The bottom line is that Sue is doing great. I went to see her this morning and the change from yesterday to this morning was remarkable. I think that she was still feeling the effects of the anesthesia as she was very tired and kept dosing on and off. But she had already been up and walking, so that was a very good sign. I then ran some errands and came back at around 2 PM. She was much more alert and had requested that they take her off of the on-demand hydo-morphine machine and give her something that lasted longer and that wasn't quite as strong. After they switched her, she brightened up to almost her usual state of cheerfulness and we went for a stroll down the hallway. It wasn't long, but it's a start and the nurses are telling her, with all sincerity, what great progress she's made. Her digestive system is starting to do the things that it's supposed to do, and if she's a lucky girl, they may upgrade her to Jello this evening! I need to remember to tell her that this is not a good weight loss regiment. :-) We're still expecting her to return home on Friday. Her mom (a RN) & dad will be staying with us for a few days to make sure that I'm taking care he properly, but I think that I'll be able to handle the job. Then again, I wouldn't expect much less from my parents. And before I forget, thank you all for the wonderful messages, thoughts and prayers. I compiled the messages into one message and read them to Sue. She thanks you all, as do I. -- Geoff From geoff at geoffschultz.org Mon Jun 2 10:32:59 2008 From: geoff at geoffschultz.org (Geoff Schultz) Date: Mon, 02 Jun 2008 10:32:59 -0400 Subject: [BlueJacket Sailing] Sue Update (3) Message-ID: <20080602143302.E85D961E1D@mailwash2.pair.com> I'm happy to report that Sue came home yesterday and is doing very well. After arriving, she was immediately outside checking the gardens. We had moved a lot of plants in preparation for having some trees taken down and yesterday afternoon she was directing her father and I as to where she wanted them replanted. I'd say that she's getting back to her old self! She's up and walking around, albeit very slowly. She was in the hospital much longer than expected. I would never have guessed that she would have been in there for 5 days, but it took her digestive system a while to restart. I didn't realize that this is an issue after abdominal surgery, but apparently it is. Ah, the things you learn! Thanks a lot again for all of the flowers, cards, calls and well wishes. Message-ID: <20081124223528.1927C61E13@mailwash2.pair.com> Happy (almost) Thanksgiving from the crew of the BlueJacket! I've been working on modifications to the JungleMedic's web site and am implementing a system based upon what I use for on my web site. I was testing it and used some of my old sailing logs, but I forgot to strip out the command that told it to e-mail the results to my mailing list. As a result you got copied on the test posts when you shouldn't have. Sorry about that! In case you don't know who the JungleMedic is, he's an amazing person who we met while in Guatemala. Bryan is from Maine and moved to Guatemala to provide medical and dental services to the Mayan Indians who were forced into the jungles due to a genocide propagated by a past government. Many of these people have never seen a doctor, let alone a dentist, in their entire life. Bryan hosts medical and dental teams to provide free services to these people, and when he gets really desperate, he even lets normal people like Sue and I participate! :-) I could never begin to do what he does, so we try to support him in any way that we can. If you're interested, you can view his web site at http://www.JungleMedicMissions.org/ We hope that everyone is doing well. I'm up to my eyeballs in boat projects and now I'm starting to work on Bryan's web site, so my plate is full. Speaking of full plates, have a wonderful Thanksgiving! -- Geoff & Sue
