Marking the 35th anniversary of the enactment of the Clean Water Act,
the National Research Council of the National Academies released a
report on October 16, 2007 focused on implementation of the Act along
the entire length of the Mississippi River. It is one of the few
comprehensive analyses of the environmental changes brought about by the
Act in a major national watershed. Dr. Dzombak will survey its findings
and recommendations and what the future may hold for further water
quality improvement in the River.

Energy Futures And Urban Air Pollution: Challenges For China And
The United States

Development, Security, and Cooperation, a unit of the National
Academies' Policy and Global Affairs Division (PGA) and the National
Academy of Engineering (NAE) have released a report designed to assist
Chinese cities in assessing their challenges associated with increased
energy demands, managing the growth in motor vehicle use, and improving
air quality, all while maintaining high rates of economic growth. The
report also identifies lessons learned from case studies of four cities
(Pittsburgh and Los Angeles from the United States, and Huainan and
Dalian from China), that examine key technological and institutional
challenges and opportunities, and highlight areas for continued
cooperation between the United States and China.
