Which would then beg the question of how far out of our way we want to go to get E_STRICT working.

Well, 12-31-2007 is the cutoff for bug fixes. 8-8-2008 is the cutoff 
for security fixes. And the php.net page already calls PHP4 
"Historical Stable". Still, as I said, not that it really matters. 
But it would have been nice to code to PHP5 directly.
