FYI: I ran into a few quirks with the release process. This was the first attempt to do the automated release for a version on a branch and it didn't quite work as expected.

There is now a 1.8.1rc1 tarball up on geeklog.net[1] but I haven't had a chance to check it, upgrade the site, or write a release announcement. I'll try to squeeze that in tomorrow, but it may as well take until Tuesday …
