Okay, here comes some more information:

I encountered another MySQL downtime at 8 am (CET) this morning. Also,
the site's error.log file lists these:

Thu Dec  4 12:25:47 2003 - 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query.
Thu Dec  4 01:56:35 2003 - 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query.
Wed Dec  3 20:20:17 2003 - 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query.
Wed Dec  3 18:50:29 2003 - 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query.
Wed Dec  3 07:59:42 2003 - 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query.
Wed Dec  3 05:19:23 2003 - 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query.
Tue Dec  2 11:53:28 2003 - 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query.
Tue Dec  2 11:46:15 2003 - 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query.
Tue Dec  2 07:32:59 2003 - 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query.
Tue Dec  2 03:20:08 2003 - 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query.
Tue Dec  2 02:33:09 2003 - 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query.
Mon Dec  1 21:05:39 2003 - 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query.

I don't see a pattern here, but it does seem to happen several times a
day recently.
