There's got to be a better, more proactive way to combatting this spammer.

It really comes down to whether or not you allow anonymous posters. Since
you guys are trying your hardest to come up with these solutions, I will
assume that you feel it is very important that anonymous posts are allowed
(and encouraged).

I've mentioned before using obscure-codes - whether for account signup, or
for anon posters - visitor has to enter in the 4 or 6 sequence code that is
presented as a garbled image. But you shared your concerns about visitors
who would have trouble reading that.

I've mentioned about moderating *all* comments - but you do lose that
realtime feel, and adds more administrative hassle.

So why not let the comment poster confirm his/her own posts? Like this -
anonymous poster must also supply their email address, poster adds comment,
geeklog generates confirm email to that address, poster must click
confirmation link in their email before comment shows up.
