From what I can see, the default value should be coming from: $story_templates->set_var('frontpage_options', COM_optionList($_TABLES['frontpagecodes'],'code,name',$A['frontpage'])); in admin/story.php. Where is $A['frontpage'] coming from, if not the default value of gl_stories.frontpage? Normal user postings have been successfully made topic only by this change. The admin postings still default to front page. Any suggestions? I'm OK with modifying SQL tables and source code. I have recently discovered GeekLog and it really suits my needs. I was using vBulletin w/ vbHome, but GeekLog really seems much suitable. My previous forum s/w was hosted internally in my company via a Windows 2000 system.

Currently due to my migration, I was preparing to install GeekLog on a Windows machine. Has anyone ever did it before, I simply can't find any instructions on the web.

Could someone please advise me, I couldn't get the directory correct also. This "required_once" field, and the path of my localhost. I tried in a vBulletin way.

Perhaps someone can kindly give me a windows way ... Thank you, and best regards.

Another problem I'm having is that when a student is in a subject area, when they click on "Get Published", it doesn't default to the subject area they're in. BTW, would like to report that the University of Adelaide, Computer Science department, has been Geeked! It's for internal use only, but it has been set up to handle all communications between students and lecturers for all subjects. This is why I've got so much focus on making the topics as separate as possible. Message-ID: <1046852672.4130.59.camel@localhost.localdomain> I'm very interested in using Geeklog in conjunction with with my institution's web single sign-on infrastructure. Is it possible to move the user authentication out of geeklog, and have it just trust whatever apache sets for REMOTE_USER? If it is, could someone point me in the right direction? If it isn't, but could be with some code modification, I'd be interested in hearing about how difficult it would be, and where I'd need to tinker with the source. Any help would be most appreciated. I tried logging back on, but it wouldnt let me... i dont get an error saying that I entered in a wrong password or anything, I just put in my username and password and hit the login button and all that happens is the page reloads showing im still a guest user". I can log in under his name and password with no problems but I'm using Explorer on a macintosh. I tried Netscape as well with no hangups. I noticed that Geeklog has a few issues with email using AOL and was wondering if it extends further than that? I deleted my browser cookies couple of times, but nothing happend. I didn't know how to deal with this, so i install geeklog again, the second time took me seconds to do it. Why do you think i was having this problems after installing a new theme in the layout folder? (everything was working perfect before i copy and rename a layout to post editing). The problem started when i added the new layout in the config.php as the default theme. After doing this, i intentionally deleted the cookies in order to experiment what a user that never entered to the site before can see. Can't i delete the cookies? Help please with this. "configinfo.php" showing blank fieds: As my problems seems to be related to cookies, Is there any relation with the blanks fields in the configinfo.php? configinfo.php says that my cookiesdomain config.php has no value: $_CONF["cookiedomain"] = ' ' What am i suppose to have there? this is showing a white field in conifiginfo.php What do i have to do after installing a new theme? Im afraid this happen again in a future when all my site is working perfect. (it won't take me seconds to reinstall it again). In the second installation i add the theme i'm going to edit before doing install.php, therefore i'm not having that problem again. but it will be more than nice knowing what happend. and knowing how to fix this cookies problem without reinstalling everything again. Mysql User Privileges: Las thing completely different, but maybe there's a realtion with all of this. In the server, we use a mysql root user to create databases, after the database is created we use a regular user that can create, edit, add entrys, etc. to the tables. After creating the database for this proyect, i added the regular mysql user in config.php but something was wrong, it said that user didn't have permission. I checked manually and the user was right, he could enter and create tables etc. etc. To avoid this problem, i added the root user to the config.php in the installation process, after the instalation was done, i changed it for the default mysql user, (we do that because of security reasons). That seems it was working well. The root user create all the tables needed by install.php and then the regular mysql user could create new entries to the tables, new users, notes, etc. (this is what i was testing before having the cookies problem) Do I need a full privilege mysql user in config.php running all the time? (i don't think the server administrator will like the idea of having a full privilege user comanded by a webpage). Do you think this was what cause the cookies problem? (after the cookies problem i tried changing back the mysql root user, but it didn't fix anything) Can you tell me exactly what privileges that mysql user need to have? HELP!!! since im runing the new fresh Geeklog installation with the regular mysql user, im afraid all of this happend again. Then, i see variables all the time and i don't know where they are, or where can i edit them. Per example in header.thtml the {menu_elements) variable. Searching in the geeklog.com for problems is not too friendly. Not everything is organized by topics. A forum will be the solution, but I have an idea to simulate a Forum in 5 minutes with the already Geeklog system. There should be a couple more Menus with a little bunch of sections on it to keep messages way more organized. Per example the actual "help sections" has 1738 disorganized messages (the advance search is the only way to look at something on that section without a headache). There should be a "Help Block" with 5 sections: * help installation* , * help plug-ins* ,* help theme* , * help hack* , *help miscellanea* . I'm not in Plug-ins yet, but i think it should be braked down too. "Please let regular users to use the Introducion field" ever time they send a message. "The introduction should usually have no more than 5 lines". It's not nice to drag the scroll bar for 10 miles or to turn 10 thousands times your mouse wheel to get the bottom options of the page ( "Previous 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 Next " ) to see more messajes subjects. Some messages are huge, and only the interested people should see all the text. ( after a specified # of lines should appear the button "read more"). I think Making these changes will help people surf better and avoid people asking more than twice the same, (i notice that this last is happend a lot when i was reading the help section). Then, there should be a "Contribute FAQ". I know that writing the FAQ is not fun for anybody, but they are really necesity and helpful for newbies and for people that is not that much newbie. Also, they can act as a reminder for more experienced users. So they are good for everybody. So, Why don't we let the FAQ create by themselves??? This is the idea. You quickly create another block called FAQ. Inside that Block you add theese sections. *FAQ Installation*, *FAQ Plug-ins *,*FAQ theme*,*FAQ hack*. You put the FAQ at the beginning so when people want to submit a Faq, they will easily find the FAQ in the "drop down Topic menu". As administrators you will only supervise that the actual users upload messages to the FAQ section with a "Question in the subject", "The messages won't have an introduction at all". So the only way to see about them is by clicking the "read more" button. (putting text bellow every question will bother). You can design a new .thml file for the FAQ, so you don't waste to much space in between questions, as sticky the questions as better. And set the sections to show at least 30 questions per page. You can create a "Contribute HOW TO" doing the same thing as in the help and in the FAQ. I think lot of people will contribute to the all of them (how to, faq). Suppose i found out something that i want to share to the community. I can start my new discoverment with a question: "How to do ...... " "HOw to create ..." etc. etc. Then I write the answer that how to and i put it in the right topic (plug-ins, theme, hack,etc.). Everybody will help this way, and everybody will be happy. Administrators won't loose more time replying "somebody ask that before", "that question was answered two month ago" etc. etc. etc. The How to and the FAQ will be like a documentatioin, tutorial and a global help. and automatically created and updated. The help block will be only for specific subjects. Newbies will solve the stupid questions reading the FAQ and How to, and they won't bother anymore. I don't thing they like to bother, lot of them start their comments saying sorry, i don't want to bother, etc. etc.. I bet all those guys wouln't be asking those questions if the site have this kind of organization. Geeklog Rocks the way it is, and with all these non time consuming changes "will Rock way more", and "it will grow way faster". Newbies are learning very slow right now, because there are no documentations and the site is not well organized for them to have a fast learning process. As better the documentation as fast people learn and will contribute in an early future. If you let newbies learn slowly, they won't contribute anything in an early future at all. I want to give special thanks too Dirk because of being one of the fastest feedback guy from Geeklog. I think you can implement all of this very fast, i mean hours. create the menu blocks and sections can be done in minutes. And the rest adjustments to increase the surfing flow will just take you a couple of hours. I'm not asking you to analize all those Help messages and move each to the corresponding new organized sections . That will be more than beautiful, but what is done is done!!!. Leave them there untill nobody use them anymore, when they became old and obsolete delete them. I think people won't even tend to read that unorganized 1738 messages section. They will directly go to the new organized Menu blocks. Very important to give to the users the intro field, or you can just set the messages to stop rendering after the 5th line and add the "read more" button. I bet you know how to do that very quickly. both options work fine with me, whater you implement is ok (but plese implement one of them). I hope this help, the idea while i was writing all of this was only helping and improve Geeklog. I wish i know programming good enough to contribute with more than just ideas. But at this moment the only thing i can give you are ideas, because my programming skill suck. I can barely understand php to change it on my own. Do you know a great site for begginer programming or a book where they teach the logical basis of programing before jumping to the code? I think learing the logical process of programming is way more important than start playing with code without knowing the basis. I remember 7 years ago i was learning programming in a course, and before every pascal code we were drawing our little schematic programs in a paper (we draw discriminators by houses, the loops by squares, etc. etc.), and you could see if the program was going to work or not before touching a computer. Do you know a site that teach all of those basis?? But I have found a few missing .thtml files in the "console" theme. To fix these, I've just been copying them from the XSilver theme. Seems to work fine. It does occur once in the footer.thtml file, I believe. It does not matter which theme I use; if I want to display a block on the right side of just a category (not all pages) other than the home page, it does not show up. I'm not noticing any PHP, Apache, or Geeklog errors. Any ideas? It appears to be a bug, but it's not even noticable once you have stories in all of your topics. i.e.: Right blocks don't show up on "topic" pages if there are not stories present for that topic. I had an old (1.2) geeklog site running for awhile (it's at gamehendge.org, btw), and I wanted to upgrade recently. I've followed the instructions from the website, the docs dir, and even some stuff from the website, but I still can't shake this error I'm getting. Check it out: If you have no cookie, all works fine, as far as I can tell. If you do have cookies, it should work until you try to login, at which point you get the following error: 1064: You have an error in your SQL syntax near ') AND perm_group >= 2) OR (perm_members >= 2) OR (perm_anon >= 2)) ORDER BY sort' at line 1 Now, it changes slightly if you use the "newadmin" account. It just error near ' and then stops. Also, I have had problems understanding exactly what was meant by the NOTES file in the sql/upgrades dir. What tables do you mean. What SQL commands should I do? I only have 40 users, so I could do it by hand, but I just don't know what to do. Also, a final note. A friend of mine has created a brand new account, and it seems to work fine for him. Check all variables with "$_CONF['path" in them and verify they are right.
