It is good to see in reflections 2012#36 from Michael Hall the benefits of
demonstrative selling. I can vouch absolutely for the effectiveness of this.
Just one example: I had a breakfast meeting with a European CEO. I had
thought to ask if I could coach him while waiting his arrival, but instead,
I just assumed permission and coached him. 

 

He soon had to dash for the Zurich flight, which by chance I would be taking
the next day, so I was prepared to let him rush off to the airport. He
paused and asked me, "How do I get more of this?" My reply was simple, "I am
expensive, but we happen to be closely located in the UK, so we can keep the
expenses down. Shall I email you a proposal for a coaching journey?" The
rest as they say, is history. I did not have to sell myself with
superlatives or describe what I do. I simply had to be the best coach I can
be.

 

The strategy is also of use in your first (and every) coaching session with
all coachees. It is too easy to think of rapport-building as a chatty
conversation, when in fact, you can build rapport by asking questions AND
signal the fact that something very special is happening.. they are already
experiencing internal states of consciousness... 

 

Added to that is my absolute attention to leaving the meeting space totally
neutral. My coat, bag and so forth are at one edge of the room and never
dominating the coaching space. My attention to their needs is totally
centred around them: where they sit and where I sit are also referred to
them. This latter may seem contrived but here is one example of why this is
important: 

 

I was with a coachee in his Zug offices and I asked where he would like me
to sit. He paused and said that his hearing was poor on his left side and
would I mind sitting on his right. In fact, my hearing is poorer on MY right
and in other circumstances, I would rather have sat on his left. Imagine the
difference that my sitting on his 'wrong' side to the building of rapport,
to being able to fully concentrate on his own 'experiential' learning
through questioning and self-reflective silences? I could not underline
Michael's thoughts more positively.
