In a recent survey, our members voted overwhelmingly (93 to 7 percent) that Fuse should tackle health care reform. At this moment key committees in Congress are weighing options and making decisions about how to meet President Obama's promise of real health care reform in 2009. *The President needs your help to ensure our U.S. Senators are on board. *Especially Senator Maria Cantwell. As a member of the powerful Senate Finance Committee Senator Cantwell carries a critical vote on this issue. And she's on the fence when it comes to the public insurance plan option - a critical element of true reform. Will you support the President and join thousands of Washington residents in signing an open letter to Senator Cantwell urging her to support a strong public health insurance option? Her vote is critical and we need to move her to yes. Click below to sign the open letter to Senator Cantwell and please ask your friends and colleagues to do the same! *http://www.fusewashington.org/page/s/CantwellOpenLtr * Time is short. Behind-the-scenes advocates say the debate is fiery and committee votes could happen as soon as next week. The next few days are a critical time to shape the legislation as it's being written. It is critical that lawmakers hear from us as health industry lobbyists attempt to block reform at every turn. *Insurance companies are spending $1.4 million per day to protect their interests and kill the public option. 1* That public option is necessary to lasting reform and is favored by a majority of Americans. One of the cornerstones of President Obama's health care plan, it allows businesses and families the choice of keeping the insurance that they have or buying into a quality public health insurance plan that would compete with private insurers to lower costs and keep the insurance industry honest. A recent study from the nonpartisan Commonwealth Fund showed that, within 10 years, health care reform that includes a public option would save up to $1.8 trillion more than a plan that does not include a public option. Please urge Senator Cantwell to support the public option. Sign an open letter to your Senator now! *http://www.fusewashington.org/page/s/CantwellOpenLtr * A Fuse member will deliver your signature to the Senator Monday morning. We hope to have so many signatures we have to deliver the letter in a truck! Help us reach that goal. Please sign the letter now. Thanks for all you do! Heres to our collective good health! Message-ID: <55196ea10907091839q47cd1770l5662fb7af21e7f57@mail.gmail.com> Please contact me , or Dustin Lambro if you are interested in helping. As the leaders of our party here in Washington, I wanted to give you all an update on what we have been doing, a sneak-preview of what we have planned this summer, and to ask for your help as we aggressively ramp up our campaign to win health care reform. For the first three weeks of our health care campaign, which we kicked off on June 6, OFA has done the following in Washington to amplify the grassroots demand for health care reform in 2009: ? Organized Health Care Organizing Kickoffs on June 6; ? Launched a Health Care Action Center online, generating thousands of calls to Congress, Letters to the Editor, health care declarations, stories, and Neighbor-to-Neighbor phone calls; ? Collected and confirmed health care stories we can use publicly to put a human face on the health care debate; ? Collected health care declarations in all Congressional Districts across the state, both offline and online, to demonstrate support for the President?s principles for reform; ? Trained 5 Summer Organizers to bolster our summer health care organizing; ? Organized dozens of National Health Care Day of Service Events on June 27; ? Generated positive earned media around these activities. All of this fits into our broad health care strategy of creating a sustained, focused grassroots campaign that influences the reform debate and provides a human voice to the issue. OFA Washington will continue to use a combination of direct advocacy, neighbor-to-neighbor contact, local community events, story amplification and nationally coordinated earned media actions throughout the summer and early fall. Specifically, in the month of July ? *in what could be the most critical moment of the health care campaign* ? OFA will continue to highlight and use personal health care stories (via web videos, online tools, local press, etc) and significantly increase our neighbor-to-neighbor canvassing and phone banking efforts. OFA will be going door-to-door and making phone calls to a targeted list of citizens, with increased door-to-door pushes during the weekends. Here are a few ways you can help: (1) *Collect health care declarations*: attached to this email is a form you can use in your meetings, at picnics or BBQs, or other events that you are doing with your organization, to help send a strong message to our Members of Congress that we cannot afford to wait for health care reform.( not attached it is here: http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/health-care-action-center/?source=feature) (2) *Organize a phone bank: *Volunteers across the state are putting together phone banks every night during the month of July to call neighbors in their own communities to ask for their support to pass health care reform. This would be a great organization-building activity for your local organization, and a way to help PCO's and other potential volunteers get used to phonebanking in an "off year" from the campaign. (3) *Organize a Canvass: *During the week of July 20-26, we will be putting together a canvass in every Congressional District. Want to send volunteers? Or want to put together a canvass in some part of your CD that week? Again, great opportunity to take advantage of some of OFA's tools online and train PCOs on how to canvass, Please feel free to give me a call and let me know about other ideas you all have that (1) help pass health care reform, and (2) help build your organization and our party as a whole. Here are two "fast-paced" numbers we need to think about this week: - *14,000* . . . The number of additional people who loose their health care coverage every day. - *5 days* . . . Democrats in Congress are moving toward a health care vote this week - less than 5 days from now. *Click here to watch our new video "As the sun sets," which shows how fast it all happens.* Today, *over 70% of the public supports health care reform*. The public understands the current system doesn't work, can't work, and needs to be replaced. But, there may be a problem . . . While Democrats are working toward solutions, Republicans are closing ranks *to defeat affordable health care and damage President Obama's Presidency*. This week, Democrats are completing work on three health care reform proposals. In fact, Speaker Pelosi and Democratic leadership are pushing toward *a health care vote by August 1st*. It's hard to believe, but Democrats may have to bring about change *without a single Republican vote in support of any of these affordable health care proposals*. *Three of these Republican health care obstructionists are in our state*! Despite public support for change - even in their own Congressional Districts - Representatives Dave Reichert, Doc Hastings, and Cathy McMorris Rodgers are dug in and planning to cast their vote against affordable health care. Your Washington State Democratic Party plays a key role in developing successful candidates and providing the campaign tools to elect Democratic challengers. Your contribution today will give us the ability to hold Washington State's right-wing conservative Republicans accountable. Your Washington State Democratic Party will challenge these three opponents of health care reform in 2010. Today Suzan Delbene ( http://www.delbeneforcongress.com) is running hard against Reichert in the 8th. We will recruit strong candidates who support reform to challenge Hastings and McMorris Rodgers. Your contribution today will give us the ability to hold Washington State's anti-reform, pro-insurance industry Republicans accountable. *REMEMBER: Campaigns to replace Washington State's three right-wing congressional Republicans are already underway. There is no time to delay.* *Please click here to contribute $15, $25, $50, or more to the Washington State Democratic Party. We work every day to protect Democratic values.
