I have received word that Spokane school districts are receiving an onslaught of opposition so I?m guessing districts in your area may also. Below are two notes ? one from a fellow DNC member and one from a local activist in my area. I encourage you to do what you can through Democratic activism to have your voices heard in your own school districts. I've been jolted this morning by how many Republican elected officials are opposing this Presidential communication, including legislators and superintendents who publicly have compared President Obama to North Korea's Kim Jong Il and Iraq's Saddam Hussein. Republican blab-radio has urged listeners to inundate schools with objections to broadcasting the speech and even have asked parents to keep their children home to avoid exposure to the President's "agenda." I phoned my 2nd grader's school this morning in favor of allowing next Tuesday's speech to be shown. I also phoned the School District with a positive phone call. As Democrats we should be aware that these types of local calls really shape the future of our country. Even heavily Democratic areas will experience a chilling effect if the phones ring constantly against the President. I encourage Democrats across the country to organize some school/District calls in local communities today. The opposition already is on the phone. Hi Friends, wherever you are... Please call or email the school districts today to encourage them and show support for our President's message to help kids stay in school. We can't allow others to interpret this message as a partisan call rather than civic duty. Even if you don't have school age kids now or yet. As a kid I can remember listening to President Reagan, now I think President Obama has an equally important message! Think globally, act locally. For those in the area, I think we need to help out Central Valley school district, sounds like it is struggling with support from opposition!! -- Crystal Ainardi -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Our country is better than this. Please take action to overrule Mayor Norris's decision to give Glenn Beck the key to the city. It disgraces Mount Vernon, Washington State, and our country to honor a national posterchild for intolerance, racism, and radical right-wing fringe politics. *Clicking below will add your name to this petition:* * **STOP GLENN BECK * Dear Friend, What the radical right is doing right now in America is just plain wrong. They've launched a scorched-earth crusade against the President and his agenda. Their aim is not just to express their disagreement, but to defeat him by dragging the democratic process and our country through the mud. *Fox TV's Glenn Beck is one of the loudest and most offensive of their crusaders. * A member of Congress screaming "You lie!" at the President on national TV? Accusing the President of attempting to indoctrinate kids into socialism by giving a speech to students urging them to stay in school? A systematic and intentional campaign organized by Glenn Beck and his cronies to disrupt town hall meetings? Our country is better than this. We know it. The question is, what can we do about it? Here's a small but important way to take a stand. Later this month the Mayor of Mount Vernon, Washington, Bud Norris, plans to give *the key to the city* *to Glenn Beck* - Fox TV's craziest, most inflammatory host and most egregious fear peddler. *Will you sign our petition urging the Mount Vernon City Council to overrule the Mayor's decision?* *It's time to stand up and renounce the politics of hatred, lies, and paranoia. It is not a time to honor them. *Glenn Beck is bad for our state, He is bad for our country. And we don't believe any public entity should be honoring him. Attached are flyers for the event. *Meet and Greet for Dave Gibney and Bill Paul *Cafe Moro 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 1st. 100 E. Main St., Pullman *Dave Gibney* (Ward #3) has decades of tireless public service under his belt, including with the Friends of Gladish Community Center, officer positions in the Whitman County Democrats, and participation in formulation of the City's current comprehensive plan. When we interviewed him, we were amazed by Dave's depth and breadth of knowledge about the City of Pullman. We know that Dave will be a committed progressive on the City Council who will fight for smart growth, sustainability, energy and water conservation, and improving solid waste recycling. Dave Gibney is running to represent Ward #2. He is also endorsed by the Whitman County Democrats. *Bill Paul (*Ward #1) is an incumbent. Bill and Eastern Wa. Voters largely agree on some of the most of the important issues facing the city including the need for Smart Growth and for the City to switch over to single stream recycling. Bill is also the first Republican that we have endorsed, and we think he will do an excellent job of continuing to represent Ward #1. In solidarity, . Bryan E. Our state just threw 40,000 Washingtonians off its Basic Health Plan, the result of a $3.7-billion budget shortfall caused by the recession. The aftermath has been horrific. People are at a higher risk of dying from preventable diseases, going bankrupt and being forced to use emergency rooms for their basic medical care. If I-1033 passes, these cuts will be permanently locked in, and things will get much worse. I-1033 would force the state to cut another $6 billion in services by 2015.1 *To me, these are more than facts and figures--they are faces and names. They are real people. I know too many of them, and it breaks my heart every day. Beyond health care, I-1033 will also be a nightmare for schools, the environment, public safety, and virtually every public service we rely on.* *We have to get the word out about how dangerous this initiative really is. *It's the only way we can beat this thing. Please join our team of Truth Tellers to share the facts about I-1033 with your friends, family members, colleagues and swing voters. Just click on the link below: http://www.fusewashington.org/page/s/1033oneclick I always say honesty is the best policy. All the deceptive language and advertising around 1033 proves the point. No one can say with a straight face that we should kick more people off of health care or lay off more teachers. We need to make sure Washington knows the truth about this initiative. I've spent my life working to make our state's public health system one of the finest in the nation. I can't sit by and watch while another ill-conceived initiative puts more and more of the people I'm dedicated to protecting at risk. *Colorado already tried something like I-1033, and it was a disaster.* It resulted in disastrous cuts in health care, to the point where the state even had to suspend the requirement that school children be fully immunized because of lack of funds. In 2005, things got so bad that Colorado voters--led by a bipartisan coalition of business leaders, health care providers, seniors, firefighters, and teachers--voted to suspend the law to stop the continued deterioration of state services. We can't let that happen here. It's time to fight back against deceptive advertising and conservative propaganda. Lives are literally on the line. Join our team of Truth Tellers and help expose Eyman's lies with some simple actions. http://www.fusewashington.org/page/s/1033oneclick Karen Bowman, R.N, Fuse supporter 1 http://www.ofm.wa.gov/initiatives/i-1033_fiscal_impact.pdf www.fusewashington.org Fuse helps you make a difference by making your voice heard on the most important issues when the decisions are being made. Many of our supporters aren't planning on voting in this off year, and that could cost us the election. *Can you help us recruit and identify our supporters -- the people who will stand up for domestic partnerships and believe it's only fair to protect people equally under the law?* *To win we must identify all of our supporters now.* If we can identify and secure the "Approve" voters now we can make sure that they all vote and the campaign can focus on reaching and persuading the swing voters who aren't sure about the measure. *Just forward this email and our pledge to Approve R. 71* to the friends, family members or colleagues you believe we can count on to stand up for all of Washington's families. With your help we can win this campaign. *Forward this email or click on these buttons to share with your friends:* [image: EMAIL YOUR FRIENDS] [image: Twitter] [image: Facebook] ------------------------------ *[image: APPROVE REF. 71] * CLICK HERE TO: *PLEDGE TO APPROVE R 71 * Dear Friend, Can you do me a small favor? *Let me know right now* that you are with me on approving Referendum 71, the referendum on Washington's domestic partnership law. Polling shows that of voters expected to turn out for this election, *only 51% plan to vote to approve the measure to protect domestic partnership rights.* Identifying all of our supporters is crucial to winning this campaign. Please click on the link below to pledge your approval: http://www.fusewashington.org/page/s/pledge71 The most important things to remember about R. 71 are: - Approving R. 71 will keep Washington's domestic partnership law intact so that all committed couples in Washington State are treated equally under state law. - More than 12,000 people are registered as domestic partners in Washington state, in every county of the state.1 - Domestic partnership rights and obligations for committed partners mean things like the right to use sick leave to care for a seriously ill partner, and death benefits for the partners of police and firefighters killed in the line of duty.2 Some people are confused about why are we voting to "Approve" on a referendum that the radical right placed on the ballot with a petition campaign. Here's the simple explanation: *They put Washington's Domestic Partnership law on the ballot because they want to repeal it. But we want to keep the Domestic Partnership law approved by our state Legislature. That's why we must vote to APPROVE Referendum 71. * It's only fair to protect people equally under the law. Families who take responsibility for each other should be able to protect themselves, especially in these tough times. The domestic partnership benefits and rights of thousands of Washington couples depends entirely on how many Washington voters turn out to Approve Referendum 71. *Pledge your vote to approve R. 71 right now!* We're counting on progressive voters to turn out in record numbers to make sure we win and send a message to everyone: Washingtonians take care of their families.
