How can one do this? (Make a remote user a member of the Root group)
Is this done through the GUI too? If so, where is this option?

Nope. I just made my OpenID-self a member of the Root group. Works as
expected.
The only problem is that you need to be a member of the Root group to be
able to do that :-)
