[geeklog-users] install cannot connect to socket

I upgraded my mysql, and it is definitely running.

Protocol version        10
Connection              Localhost via UNIX socket
UNIX socket             /tmp/mysql.sock
Uptime:                 21 min 2 sec

dbx:/usr/local/mysql#

But install.php fails with:

Warning: MySQL Connection Failed: Can't connect to local MySQL server
through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (111) in
/var/www/geeklog/system/databases/mysql.class.php on line 104
Cannnot connect to DB server

/var/run/ has no entries for myssql ... 

any suggestions (I am new to mysql)
