I was thinking more about the pop-up thing last night, after I'd sent the
e-mail, and remembered I hate pop-ups so why should I put one on purpose on
my website.
Geez, I remember reading that story a few months back, but I could find it
on a search. That's why I thought I'd ask.

Yikes. I would vote against that for two simple reasons:
1. Popups, in any form, are annoying.
2. User who have Javascript switched off will not be able to log in.
