Yes. It didn't make much difference.

One thing I haven't tried is temporarily disabling the code that inserts 
images from Gallery inline in my stories. I suspect that this could be 
the problem. I am presuming that geeklog must render all stories in 
order to calculate the no. of pages? Or does it just do 5 (or 10) per page?
